About the Program
The Teaching/Learning in Nursing and Health Sciences Certificate provides academic preparation for a career in education in a variety of contexts. The courses focus on theories and processes related to instructional design and delivery, learner assessment and evaluation, and curriculum design and development. The certificate includes a capstone course where students apply and synthesize content in a practicum experience (90 contact hours) that is individualized to students' needs, interests, and career goals.

This online program consists of four courses (3 semester hours each) and can be completed in three to four semesters of part-time study. Courses are offered during the fall, spring, and summer terms.
Students enrolled in UIC graduate programs may also enroll in the certificate or take individual courses as electives.
Course content was designed to prepare students to meet the education requirements for the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) examination offered by the National League for Nursing (NLN). Students who wish to sit for the examination will also need a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing and experience in the academic faculty role. Please see the NLN website for more information.
Because the Teaching/Learning Certificate is a fully online program, students are assessed online tuition. The current online-tuition rate can be found here: https://registrar.uic.edu/tuition/grad/ . Students currently enrolled in a UIC graduate program are charged range tuition.”
The following criteria must be met for admission:
1. Baccalaureate degree with a minimum GPA of 2.75/4.00 in the last 60 hours.
2. Prior teaching experience in at least one area of health care (students, staff, clients/patients or consumers) is preferred.

Synthesis and application of teaching/learning theories, methods, and strategies for instructional design and delivery, learner/course/program evaluation and assessment, curricular processes in individualized settings and contexts.Prerequisite(s): Credit or concurrent registration in NUEL 510 and credit or concurrent registration in NUEL 511 and credit or concurrent registration in NUEL 512; and consent of the instructor.
All courses, except for NUEL 513, can be taken in any sequence. NUEL 513 must be taken last or concurrently with another course in the final semester. See the Schedule of Classes for course offerings. No transfer credit will be accepted toward the certificate.
Students in the Teaching/Learning Certificate are held to the academic policies of the UIC College of Nursing, which state that students are expected to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 (“B” average) throughout the program. See the Academic Standards and Policies—Graduate section of the College of Nursing Student Handbook for more information. Students wishing to transfer academic credit earned in the certificate program to a graduate degree program must receive a minimum grade of “B” in each course to be transferred.
Students will need access to a computer and the Internet.

The Teaching/Learning Certificate admits during the fall and spring semesters. Prospective students are encouraged to complete the application process early. All application materials must be submitted by deadline for full consideration.

Current UIC Students
- Students who are currently in a graduate or professional program at the College of Nursing should contact the Office of Academic Programs to add the teaching/learning certificate to their record. No formal application is required.
- Apply through UIC's Online Graduate Application.
Apply through UIC’s Online Graduate Application – http://applygrad.uic.edu/ Once you are in the application, click on the link for Intended Program. Select Campus Certificate for type of program and then Teaching/Learning Certificate for your Intended Program
All additional application materials will be uploaded directly to the application. A completed application will include the following:
- Bachelor’s degree transcript plus any nursing transcripts that were not part of your bachelor’s degree. Please do not mail or electronically send any transcripts to the College of Nursing nor to the Admissions Office. Transcripts must be uploaded directly to the application
- Resume or CV
- Nursing Supplement – a series of Certificate specific questions that will appear as a link within the application once you select School Nurse as your program
- One letter of recommendation which ideally should come a supervisor, a certified master's level nurse who knows your quality of work, former instructors, or anyone who can speak to your professional and scholastic abilities. Within the application you will provide the name and e-mail of your reference and they will be sent a link to submit the recommendation. Recommendation letters should not be e-mailed nor mailed into the College of Nursing.
ADMISSIONS DECISION TIMELINE
Applications to Certificate programs will not be reviewed by the College of Nursing faculty until after the application deadline for the semester in which the applicant is seeking admission. Applicants are generally notified of their admission status within 30 days of the application deadline.
