The Institute for Health Care Innovation (IHCI) exists to expand the mission of the UIC's College of Nursing through the innovative integration of teaching, practice and research. The IHCI is a model entrepreneurial business unit in the CON, a leader in financial viability and recognized for its expertise in healthcare and educational financial management. The IHCI models the integration of teaching and practice through:

  • Highly relevant evidence-based courses available to practicing RNs and APRNs
  • Progressive applied learning opportunities for graduate students in IHCI Faculty Practice settings
  • Unique resourceful solutions through Consulting Services

Priority areas for integrating teaching, research, practice and policy are:

  • Continuing Education and Certificate Programs

The Executive Director of the IHCI and the Directors of Continuing Studies, Faculty Practice, Consulting Services and Policy Initiatives all hold faculty appointments in the College of Nursing.

Mile Square Health Center-Humboldt Park

Mile Square Health Center-Humboldt Park is an innovative, nurse-managed health center in the Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood specializing in providing integrated primary and mental healthcare services for people with a serious mental illness (SMI). It is affiliated with the Institute for Healthcare Innovation (IHCI) at the UIC College of Nursing. This faculty practice has won numerous awards, including the American Academy of Nursing Raise the Voice Edge Runners Award, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Outstanding Faculty Practice Award, and the Illinois Health Connect - Your Healthcare Plus Top Performer ÔÇ£Excellence in Diabetes Management AwardÔÇØ 2011.

Mile Square Health Center-Humboldt Park is staffed by certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (also known as Nurse Practitioners) who work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to provide primary healthcare, behavioral and mental healthcare services. The clinic is committed to the Primary Care Medical Home model (PCMH) and partners with patients and families to best understand and respect each personÔÇÖs unique needs, culture, values and preferences and to help patients manage and organize their own care. As a PCMH, Mile Square Health Center-Humboldt Park provides comprehensive, coordinated care and ensures access to healthcare providers 24/7.

Mile Square Health Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago is a Federally Qualified Health Center, enabling our clinic to expand its scope of services to all community residents in addition to our focus population. Mile Square Health Center-Humboldt Park's partners assist with the systems and support an efficient and effective Academic Nursing Center. In 2010, our clinic was one of only 10 Nurse Managed Clinics in the U.S. to receive funding from President ObamaÔÇÖs Affordable Care Act.
