Admissions Requirements

All Applicants

The following criteria must be met for full consideration into the Advanced Generalist Master of Science (AGMS) program:

  • Baccalaureate degree with an upper-division major in nursing from a CCNE or NLN accredited program OR a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution in a field other than nursing plus an RN license.  Applicants may apply as they are completing their degree but all students enrolling in the AGMS or MS must have a bachelor’s degree before matriculating into the program.
  • All students must have a valid license to practice professional nursing in at least one political jurisdiction. Applicants may apply before they have passed the NCLEX and attained nursing licensure but all students enrolling in the DNP or MS must have their RN license before the first day of class.  Admitted students who do not have an RN license by the first day of classes will have their admission offer rescinded.
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00/4.00 in the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of the first baccalaureate degree and a minimum of a 3.00/4.00 on all work beyond the baccalaureate level.
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores. Applicants with less than a cumulative 3.25/4.00 GPA in their baccalaureate (or higher) degree are required to submit GRE scores by the application deadline. Cumulative GPA’s are pulled directly from the transcripts submitted. Courses taken after a baccalaureate (or higher) degree has been earned will not be calculated into the cumulative GPA for the GRE waiver.
  • Introductory courses in statistics and research (or equivalent) to be completed prior to beginning the AGMS program. Most applicants will have met this requirement while completing the BSN degree.

International Applicants

International applicants, or domestic applicants educated outside the U.S., must submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores

The TOEFL/IELTS requirement is only waived for applicants with either two years of full time study in the U.S. or one year of full time employment

Minimum acceptable scores are available on the Admissions website –

Any questions about the TOEFL/IELTS requirement must be addressed to the UIC Admissions Office. The College of Nursing CANNOT answer questions related to the English competency requirement.
