Program of Study
- Required courses for program.

The Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program began in 1992 and will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2017.   Our Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner program has been approved by the National Certification Council since its inception.  Our WHNP students share a similar course of study and clinical experiences with the nurse-midwifery students, thereby receiving the same high quality education for which our Nurse-Midwifery Program is known.

Chicago based WHNP students also begin their clinical experiences in the UIC Nurse-Midwifery Practice.  They have the opportunity to learn Obstetric Triage and High Risk care as the CNM’s perform all triage for the OB/GYN department and have a collaborative practice to manage High-Risk pregnancies.  Our WHNP students also learn from WHNP’s in specialty practices such as urogynecology, infertility and family planning.  We place students in all clinical sites, students do not find their own clinical sites.

WHNP’s commonly work in outpatients settings and care for women across the lifespan, including gynecology, pregnancy and family planning.  It is also common to specialize in one aspect of women’s health like urogynecology.  Many WHNP’s are employed by hospitals to perform obstetric triage for Labor and Birth units.  WHNP’s are seen as important in helping to contribute to addressing our impending maternity care provider shortage.  So it is a good time to become a WHNP!
