Research by CON Prof. Mariann Piano Identifies Biomarker in Blood of Binge Drinkers
Research by CON Prof. Mariann Piano and three other colleagues has identified a biomarker that is significantly higher in the blood of binge drinkers than in moderate drinkers. The biomarker is called "phosphatidylethanol (PEth)". Dr. Piano tells UIC News that together with self-reporting, the biomarker "could provide an objective measure for use in research, screening and treatment of hazardous alcohol use among young adults".
