Dr. Mary Kapella Appointed Interim Director of Center for Narcolepsy, Sleep and Health Research (CNSHR)
Dr. Mary Kapella, Asst Professor in the UIC College of Nursing’s (CON) Department of Biobehavioral Health Science, has been appointed Interim Director of the Center for Narcolepsy, Sleep and Health Research (CNSHR). She has an 18 year history with the UIC CON. Dr. Kapella joined the college in 1998 as a member of our staff in which she served as a research specialist. In 2004, she joined the ranks of our faculty as a Research Assistant Professor, then joined the tenure track as Assistant Professor in 2013. From 2007-2013, she served as the CNSHR’s Associate Director for Outreach and Education.
Dr. Kapella is a productive scholar. Her research focuses on fatigue and insomnia in people with chronic illness. Currently, she serves as Principle Investigator of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded study, to investigate non-pharmacological therapy for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who have problems falling asleep or staying asleep. Dr. Kapella has disseminated her research in top-tier national and international journals such as the American Journal of Nursing, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; as well as presented at national and international conferences. Additionally, she has received several honors for her research and teaching excellence.
A national and international search is currently underway for the next Director of the CNSHR.
