Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Acute Care Program
Program of Study
- Required courses for program.
The acute care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) Program prepares graduates to provide health care to infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with acute, complex, critical, and chronic illness in a variety of health care settings. PNPs work as part of an inter-professional team to provide care for these patients who may have life-threatening illness and organ dysfunction or failure. Practice settings include hospitals, intensive care units, sub specialty clinics, emergency departments, and the patient’s home.
The program curriculum is based on the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) core competencies and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) position statement on the acute care pediatric nurse practitioner. The program is approved by the Pediatric Nurse Certification Board (PNCB) and graduates are eligible to take the acute care PNP exam.
The acute care PNP program was established in 2014 and the number of applicants and enrolled students has increased steadily each year. The first group of students will graduate in 2017. Faculty facilitate diverse clinical experiences in a variety of settings beginning with a foundation in primary care. Students have the opportunity to participate in a service learning experience in Haiti with UIC faculty and students from other UIC APN programs. Subsequent practica are focused on chronic/specialty care and care of children in critical/acute care settings. The job market for PNPs with acute care certification in Illinois and nationally is robust. The primary employers are children’s hospitals but other hospitals also employ PNPs with this certification for in patient roles.
