PNL - Power of Nursing Leadership

PNL - the premier gathering of the most innovative nurse leaders from academia, health systems, government, entrepreneurship and business throughout Illinois.

Overview

19th Annual Power of Nursing Leadership
Friday, November 4, 2016
Hilton Chicago

The premier gathering that celebrates the impact and achievements of Illinois nurse leaders.

The purpose of the Power of Nursing Leadership event is to celebrate the impact and achievements of nurse leaders in the state of Illinois. The goal of the event is to enhance and engage partnerships among leaders in academia, government, health care delivery and health care services.

Please join us!

In 1998, leaders within the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Nursing, along with its Alumni Board of Directors and the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, envisioned the inaugural Power of Nursing Leadership event to celebrate the strong nurse leader cadre in Illinois and the many sectors in which they practice. This annual event has grown, not only in size, but also to include awards and recognitions and, this year, new opportunities for participating organizations to promote their achievements.

Whether you plan to participate as an individual, an organization, a sponsor, or an exhibitor only, we look forward to your involvement in this year’s Power of Nursing Leadership event.

"This is my favorite event that I attend annually. I always leave with a refreshed perspective of nursing and being a nurse, and increased sense of professionalism."

    Speaker

We are honored to present the 2016 Power of Nursing Leadership Keynote Speaker, Rosemary Gibson, MSc

The Power in You to Make a Difference

    Rosemary Gibson, MSc
    Senior Advisor, The Hastings Center

Ms. Gibson is an award-winning author, inspirational speaker, and advisor to organizations that advance the public’s interest in health care. The 2014 recipient of the highest honor from the American Medical Writers Association for her outstanding contributions to the field of medical communication, her writing has given voice to the public’s interest in critical health care issues of the day.

A national authority on health care reform, Medicare, patient safety and overtreatment in medicine, Ms. Gibson has written critically acclaimed books, including Medicare Meltdown (2013), Battle Over Health Care (2012), Treatment Trap (2010), and Wall of Silence (2003). Her books have been reviewed in Publishers Weekly, the Washington Post, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and Health Affairs; referenced in proceedings of the U.S. Senate; mentioned in Congressional testimony; and noted in major newspapers and magazines. The Chinese translation of Treatment Trap won the prestigious Open Book Award from China Times; Wall of Silence has been translated into Japanese.

As a Senior Program Officer at Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for sixteen years, Ms. Gibson was chief architect of its $200 million national strategy to establish inpatient palliative care programs that now number 1,600, an increase from about 10 in the 1990s. Her efforts included working with Bill Moyers on the PBS documentary series, On Our Own Terms, which focused on end-of-life care in the U.S. and has been viewed by more than 20 million people. Her accomplishments were recognized by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, which presented her with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

While at the Foundation, Ms. Gibson worked with national leaders to improve care for chronically ill older adults, providing community-based alternatives to nursing homes. She led national quality and safety initiatives in partnership with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement: Pursuing Perfection, Transforming Care at the Bedside, and Rapid Response System implementation. With nurse leaders, she established the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses project and the Nursing Quality Alliance.

Ms. Gibson is currently a Senior Advisor at The Hastings Center, a nonpartisan research institution dedicated to bioethics and the public interest. She is founding editor for “Less is More” in JAMA Internal Medicine, and a contributing writer for Health Affairs blog, The Huffington Post, Consumer Reports Health, and the Association of Health Care Journalists. She is on the board of directors of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and member of the Clinical Learning Environment Review Evaluation Committee. She serves on the MedStar Health System Institute for Quality and Patient Safety Advisory Board in Washington, D.C., and is board chair of the Altarum Institute, a non-profit health systems research organization. She is a public member of the American Board of Medical Specialties Health and Public Policy Committee and founding member of the Consumers Union Safe Patient Project Network. She served on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Technical Expert Panel for Consumer Reporting of Adverse Events.

Ms. Gibson has given presentations and grand rounds on patient safety at hundreds of hospitals. Among others, she has keynoted meetings of the National Quality Forum, The Joint Commission, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the Federation of State Medical Boards, National Summit on Overuse held by The Joint Commission and American Medical Association, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing hosted its 17th annual Power of Nursing Leadership Event on November 6th in Chicago. Almost 500 nurse leaders from throughout Illinois attended to connect with their peers.

"In this era of health care challenges, it is more important than ever to recognize strong nursing leadership", says Terri E. Weaver, Dean of the UIC College of Nursing.  "The Power of Nursing Leadership Event is an opportunity to celebrate the impact of the most outstanding nurse-leaders who are shaping health care throughout Illinois", Weaver said.

Several awards were presented at the event. The Joan L. Shaver Illinois Nurse Leader Award recognized Dr. Michelle Janney, Senior Vice President and Wood-Prince Family Chief Nurse Executive from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.  This award is given to an outstanding nurse leader who is highly influential in shaping quality health care in Illinois through hard work, dedication, supremely skilled leadership, and the courage to break through barriers.

Another award offered each year is the SAGE Award which recognizes nurses who have made a significant impact on the lives and careers of others through their actions as role models, facilitators and mentors. Recipients of the SAGE Award were Dr. Elaine Graf who is the Research and Funding Coordinator for the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Dr. Mariann Piano who is Department Head and Professor in Biobehavioral Health Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing.

27 extraordinary Pinnacle Leaders were selected by their peers to be recognized at the event.

The day’s Mary Mullane Keynote Speaker was Angela Barton McBride, a renowned women’s health researcher in the areas of psychology of parenthood and psychiatric nursing. McBride is distinguished professor and dean emerita at the Indiana University School of Nursing. She brought her leadership experience as well as her extensive scholarship in leadership development to the day’s keynote address. She has received numerous honors throughout her career, including election to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies and designation as a “Living Legend” by the American Academy of Nursing.

    History

In 1998, leaders within the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Nursing, along with its Alumni Board of Directors and the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, envisioned the inaugural Power of Nursing Leadership Event to celebrate the strong nurse leader cadre in this state and the many sectors in which they practice. Inspired by the leadership of our alumni, as well as our academic, health systems, government and corporate partners, the primary goals were to gather highly influential nurse leaders in Illinois and then spotlight their collective influence and dedication to health care throughout the state.  The event has grown exponentially and has become the premier gathering of the most innovative nurse leaders from academia, health systems, government, entrepreneurship, and business.

The following is an overview of the history of PNL, including those who have been honored with the prestigious Joan L. Shaver Illinois Outstanding Nurse Leader Award and the SAGE Award.
