Dr. Paula P. Meier Receives 2016 Judith L. Storfjell Distinguished Award for Scholarly Practice

Meier, PhD, BSN ’71, RN, FAAN will receive the UIC College of Nursing Judith Lloyd Storfjell Distinguished Award for Scholarly Practice.  The award recognizes a UIC College of Nursing faculty or alumnus who has made an outstanding contribution to nursing practice.  Dr. Meier is most deserving of this prestigious honor.

Dr. Meier is the Director for Director for Clinical Research and Lactation, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Professor of Women, Children and Family Nursing and Professor of Pediatrics at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. She has worked as a practitioner and researcher in the area of human milk, lactation and breastfeeding for premature infants and their mothers since 1975. Dr. Meier has conducted numerous externally-funded translational research and demonstration projects, and served as the principal investigator for a recently-completed, 5-year, $2.76 million, NIH-funded study, "Health Outcomes and Cost of Human Milk Feedings for Very Low Birthweight Infants."  She and her research team have continued to study the impact of human milk feedings received during the NICU hospitalization on childhood health, neurobehavioral and cost outcomes for this same cohort of VLBW infants.   Her other external funding has included grants from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), industry and philanthropic organizations. Meier's funded studies throughout the years have targeted barriers to the initiation and maintenance of lactation in breast pump-dependent mothers of NICU infants, as well as clinical techniques to optimize the impact of human milk on their NICU infant's outcome.

Dr. Meier has published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, served as a former president of the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation, is a member of the Health Advisory Council for La Leche League, International and has helped thousands of mothers provide milk for their NICU infants. She was the recipient of the 2005 Distinguished Alumna Award from the UIC College of Nursing and the 2013 Distinguished Alumna Award from Rush University College of Nursing.  In 2013, she received the Audrey Hepburn Award for Contributions to the Health and Welfare of Children from Sigma Theta Tau, International. 

Dr. Paula P. Meier is an extraordinary leader in nursing practice.  She is most deserving of this prestigious award.  Dr. Meier will be honored at a CON award celebration on April 8th where she will present a sampling of her work.
