  • Clinical Assistant Professor
Bio

Dr. Jones research interests include the development, implementation and evaluation of social-networking interventions to reduce risky behaviors and promote health with a particular focus on adolescent and young adult populations. Because social media internet sites are quickly replacing traditional forms of media communication, this venue as a means of health education appears ripe for investigation. To date few researchers have focused on the viability of social networking sites to support health education messages regarding risky adolescent sexual behavior. Outcome measurement has been primarily limited to usage—number of “hits” at these sites. Dr Jones doctoral research focused on evaluating an evidenced-based social media intervention to reduce the incidence of Chlamydia among 15-24 year olds. The intervention consisted of a Facebook site that addressed the signs, symptoms, treatment, screening and prevention of Chlamydia infection. Findings included a 23% self-reported increase in condom use, and a 54% reduction in Chlamydia cases among 15-17 year olds. Study results suggest that social media is an effective mechanism for information dissemination and the promotion of positive behavioral changes among this population. Dr. Jones project adds to our knowledge base by focusing on outcomes associated with the use of social media sites for preventive health education. Dr. Jones has both presented and published her work in this area and is currently conducting focus groups to determine how to most effectively adapt the intervention to the Peoria community.
